Such devices can also help you deal with Phase unbalance or phase asymmetry issues. This situation occurs when one or multiple line to line voltages do not match with each other. This results in unbalanced voltage, which leads to unbalanced current inside the motor winding. If this happens, the temperature of the windings will also increase.
Phase asymmetry can be caused due to an unbalanced transformer bank, an unstable utility supply, or because of unevenly distributed loads on the same power system. A under voltage monitoring relay can protect the motor from damage because of phase asymmetry by turning off the equipment as soon as such an issue is detected.
Another issue that a voltage detection relay can be effective against is phase loss, which occurs when one out of the three phases is lost. Phase loss can happen because of a broken wire, thermal overload, mechanical failure, or worn contact. If phase loss transpires, motors, compressors, and pumps with 3 phases will consume excess current.
This could result in the device becoming overheated and therefore unsafe. A good-quality voltage monitor relay will protect the system from damage in such a scenario by immediately switching the equipment off as soon as a phase loss is detected.
Sometimes voltages are attained at their maximum positive value. When this happens, it is called phase sequence. When it comes to a three-phase system, each of the three voltages should fall within the same magnitude while ensuring the frequency is displaced electrically by an angle of 120 degrees.
If any of the coil phases are named R, Y, B, then the positive phase sequence will be BRY, RBY, YBR. A voltage monitoring relay can detect such a fault.
